Cruelty free mascara popart

Cruelty-Free Beauty Products: Mascara

On my continued quest to cruelty-free beauty, I’ve been purchasing one item at a time….next up needing to be replaced, my mascara.

Drum roll, please…..

First, it needs to be said that whilst this isn’t thee most expensive brand that’s available, it’s certainly not thee least expensive brand that’s out there either. Better Than Sex is coming in at $24, but from the  others I’ve tried…..this stuff ROCKS!!!  You’ll first fall in love with the packaging…..but don’t get seduced, because it’s what’s on the inside, that will blow your socks off! I’m talking length, volume and that oh so important dramatic factor that really, only we ladies can deliver with just the blink of an eye. The brush has an hourglass shape, allowing the formula to coat each lash for some serious voluptuous volume. I experienced no flaking, smudging or clumping, Better Than Sex gives you mind-blowing lashes, every time!

Have you ever wondered what they put in that stuff that resides so close to the windows of your soul? Well let me tell you, there are some pretty horrifying, harmful and unnecessary ingredients that can potentially harm your health in many common brands of mascara. From department store high-end name brands to drugstore price friendly brands, here are some things to consider before your next purchase.

Parabens: Antimicrobial agents added to delay composition and inhibit spoilage by preventing the growth of bacteria, yeast, and/or mold. Parabens have been linked to cancer due to their potential developmental, reproductive and immune toxicity, not to mention high concentrations of this paraben stuff have been found in human breast tumors. Why?

Aluminum Powder: This metallic substance is used as a cosmetic colorant and is a neurotoxin. Yep, you read that right, NEUROTOXIN! This little gem is considered worse than mercury because there is evidence that aluminum powder can lead to organ-system toxicity. However, it’s clear that this dangerous element doesn’t have the same effect on everybody, so it’s difficult to pinpoint thee exact way in which it harms our bodies. Soooooo why not ditch this stuff altogether, right? I do not need this in my life.

Propylene Glycol: Propylene Glycol can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in concentrations as low as 2 percent, and is considered a toxic substance by the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Enough said, right?

Retinyl Acetate (Vitamin A Acetate): Because it is a form of vitamin A, retinyl acetate may seem harmless, but it’s not. In fact, its use is restricted in Canadian cosmetics. You want to avoid this stuff, it’s a carcinogen and can cause developmental and reproductive problems. Yet something else I do not need in my life.

The above mentioned are just a few of the unnecessary toxic ingredients we’ve been slathering on our face, eyes, and lips for years… now that we know all this, what do we do? Spend some time reading, make a list of companies to stay away from and tell as many people who will listen that we will not tolerate the torture of innocent creatures for the sake of beauty and a few bucks.

At the end of the day my friends, there are a lot of new lines out there that are both cruelty-free and non-toxic, if it’s not Too Faced Better Than Sex, find something that works for you and spread the word! I’m always listening~

***Common brands who actively use these toxic chemicals: L’Oreal, Cover Girl, Avon, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, Maybelline, Neutrogena, Revlon, Chanel, Lancome, Estee Lauder, Mineral Fusion, Rimmel, Avon, Elizabeth Arden, Mary Kay and Almay. (The above brands not only actively use these toxic chemicals, they also happen to be on the list of companies that ANIMAL TEST! Coincidence? I think not. The list goes on….research and knowledge are your friends)***
