Cruelty-Free Skin Care: Facial Scrub

If I mentioned the skin care line St. Ives, chances are you’ve not only heard of them but you’ve probably purchased several of their products over the years. Heck, in my early twenties (I’m talkin’ WAY back!) they were affordable, worked well and seemed like a line I could feel good about using. Well that was then…. and as of spring 2011, St. Ives has been secretly testing on animals behind customer’s backs! What gives? I mean, now that I know this information, I can’t very well go back to supporting a company that tortures animals, lies to their customers AND uses toxic ingredients.

So what do you do? Research! I had been using their green tea face scrub for years, a lot finer than their better known apricot scrub, being far less abrasive and with a pleasant smell. However, I was now scrub-less and on new a mission.

If I may be so bold as to claim, Mission Accomplished!

Acure Brightening Facial Scrub

If you aren’t familiar with Acure Organics, holy smokes you should be! I bought their Brilliantly Brightening Facial Scrub and I LOVE it! Sea kelp, lemon peel and French green clay top the list of natural ingredients! 100% Vegan! Paraben free, sulfate free, phthalate free, mineral oil free, petrolatum free, silicone free and cruelty-free. Now that is something I can definitely be on board with!

Cruelty Free & Vegan

But wait… does it work you ask? One word: AMAZEBALLS! It smells fantastic! It’s a dark sea kelp green and a wee bit thicker than that other companies so you don’t have to use as much, which is clearly yet another bonus. Only thing, I am somewhat of an impulse shopper…. I wanted to try it ASAP and paid a much higher price at a health food market than if I had had more will power and waited the whole two days it took for Amazon Prime to deliver. Oh and the news just keeps getting better and better, your new and improved cruelty-free scrub is only a couple bucks more than that other stuff! Under $8…. and you use less! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! No animals were harmed here AND you get a far superior product you can feel good about from a company that cares. Winning!

I will be slowly updating everything I use, no more cruel and dirty purchases for this girl! More on that, as it develops.

  1. Interesting stuff! I actually went into a shop the other day to get some ‘pore-opening’ facewash and wanted to be as animal-friendly as possible. I ended up stood there with my phone frantically googling the different products to no avail.

I ended up buying Witch Hazel Face Scrub which I fear isn’t very animal-friendly (despite what it says on the bottle), do you know about this one?

    1. Hey Stephen, thank you for stopping by and for your question. You would be amazed at all the different lines that still animal test, quite a few high-end and have been around for decades. Knowing the brand you ended up purchasing is the most important part of that equation. If you like, I’ll do the research for you and message you back.

That being said, I absolutely LOVE the Acure Organics Brilliantly Brightening Facial Scrub with sea kelp and lemon peel! It’s ah-maaaaazing! I will definitely be working my way through the Acure Organics line and posting as I go, so stay tuned~ 🙂

  2. As a vegan, I live a complete plant based diet. I absolutely agree about the cruelty to animals needs to stop. It is funny, I was a hunter in my past and even a dairy farmer. Once I turned vegan because of health reasons, I found there is no need to kill or test animals for any products. I know this isn’t much about your product but interested in how this product works for you. Very good article! Thank you!!

    1. Good morning Jim,

Thanks for stopping by and sharing. As a vegan myself, I couldn’t agree more. I wish more people would get on board, for both health and humane reasons. I fricken LOVE this Brilliantly Brightening Facial Scrub! I can’t say enough about it! I am slowly replacing all my products to be cruelty-free, not just beauty, but all household products. This list is long, but I’m finding new and even better replacements that I can feel good about purchasing. More on that as it develops…..stay tuned! 🙂

  3. Hi Nina:) I loved your post about alternative facial cleansers! I am also highly against animal testing. I distrust companies who say they don’t test on animals, and then later, find out that they do.
The Acure Organics that you talked about sounds so much better than what I’ve been using. If it’s organic, I’m all for it! Can you tell me, in your opinion, what is the best place to purchase it, other than Amazon?

    1. Good evening Suzi,

Thank you for stopping by and sharing the same disdain for companies that torture animals, lie to their customers AND use toxic ingredients. Not sure why in this day in age those barbaric methods are still being used.

The Acure Organics Brilliantly Brightening Facial Scrub can be purchased from both your local health food markets and from the Acure Organics site, although it does cost a third more than from Amazon. I have purchased from both, and they are the same, no crazy switch-a-roo upon delivery.

      I hope this helps.

      Appreciate your time.
